The Big Give Christmas Challenge 2009 raised £8.5m for 174 charities. The case studies below showcase the innovative ways that fundraisers used the Challenge to inspire their donors.
WWF combined the challenge with their press, mail and web campaigns to double the number of tigers worldwide by 2020. Their tagline ‘Double Your Donation – Help Double the Number of Tigers’ demonstrated to donors the impact their gifts could make.
MedAir informed all of their supporters about the Christmas Challenge by letter. They included a post-it note with the date, time and Big Give web address for people to stick to their computers to make sure they remembered to make a donation when it counted most.
Friends of the Earth encouraged all of their donors to pass on their contact details with a prize draw to win a pair of Eurostar tickets. This gave supporters another incentive to donate and increased the charity’s warm database.
The Wildlife Trust for Lancashire, Manchester and North Merseyside
Getting supporters to donate online for the first time can be tricky. The Wildlife Trust set up three ‘Donation Stations’ to guide people through the process. Ideas such as this helped 70% of charities get online donations from supporters for the first time.
UK Friends of Abraham Initiative
The UK Friends of Abraham Initiative used the Challenge opportunity to approach their trustees. All were thrilled to be given the opportunity to double the value of their donation with four giving for the first time and one making their first gift for two years.
This was a fabulous challenge which took WWF out of its comfort zone and brought new life to our on line giving programme. It was also a great tool to approach trustees and major donors with.
