Christmas Challenge 2011 – Case Studies

The Christmas Challenge 2011 raised over £12.5million for the participating charities.

The 2011 Challenge was the biggest yet, with over 400 charities participating and 19,7000 individual online donations taken over the Challenge period. Taking part in the Christmas Challenge gives charities the opportunity to try many new methods of fundraising, as well as gaining additional funds from our ‘Big Givers’.

Below you will find examples of two of the charities who benefitted greatly from the 2011 Challenge. Read on to find out how they did it.

Orangutan Foundation

The Orangutan Foundation succesfully reached all of their Christmas Challenge targets, raising over £44,000 along the way. To find out more about the fundraising methods that they used to reach their targets, click here.


The Butterfly Tree

In 2011, the Butterfly Tree participated in the Christmas Challenge for their first time. They ran an online campaign, with no overhead costs, to meet their Christmas Challenge target of £12,000. To read more about how they did it, click here.


The Opera Group

The Opera Group successfully ran an email marketing campaign to raise over £33,225 through the Christmas Challenge. Their digital campaign meant that they had little overhead costs associated with raising these funds. To find out more, click here.


Christmas Challenge 2010 – Case Studies

The Big Give Christmas Challenge 2010 raised over £9.4m for the 323 charities that took part.

Below are six case studies which show how charities achieved their success.

Women For Women International UK

Women for Women used a variety of methods of communication to raise awareness of the opportunity for their donors to have their gifts matched. They doubled the amount they raised during the Christmas Challenge 2009. To read about all the ways in which they managed to achieve this, click here.

The Funding Network

The Funding Network used the Christmas Challenge to branch out into a new area of fundraising for them. As a result they raised £25,000 in total. To see how they achieved this, click here.


Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory

SATTF created many new key donor relationships as a result of taking part in the Christmas Challenge and raised a total of £20,880. To read more, click here.

The Holburne Museum Bath
